Calculation method
Tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100). Total = bill + tip. Per person = total ÷ number of people. By US convention many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal; tipping on the after-tax total is also common and slightly more generous.

Frequently asked questions
Sit-down service: 18–20% is normal, 20–25% for great service. Bartenders: $1–$2 per drink or 20%.
Common practice is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but tipping on the total is fine too — the difference is small.
Optional. 10% on the order is generous; rounded up to the next dollar is fine for small orders.
